Chinese Foxglove
One of my favorites, Rehmannia produces spikes of gloxinia-shaped flowers in a delicious raspberry color, its yellow throats dotted inside with carmine. The textured leaves grow in rosettes and turn deep red in fall, spreading readily by runners where hardy. Its roots hold potent medicinal properties, part of traditional Chinese medicine. Listed in a 1915 seed catalog for florists, it has captured the hearts of generations of gardeners.
